Most people know their star sign and not much else — and then wonder why the horoscope for “Leo” never quite fits. Your star sign is one line of a much larger map. This guide walks you through reading a birth chart from scratch: what the wheel shows, the three placements that matter most, what the planets and houses mean, and how astrologers use the chart in a reading. No prior knowledge needed.
What a birth chart actually is
Stand outside at the moment you were born and look up: the birth chart is a diagram of that sky, drawn as a wheel. Around the outside are the twelve signs of the zodiac. The wheel is divided into twelve slices called houses. Placed around it are the Sun, the Moon and the eight planets, each in a sign and a house. The lines between planets show their angles to one another (aspects). Two people born on the same day have the same Sun sign; only people born at the same minute in the same place share a chart.
What you need
- Date of birth.
- Time of birth, as exact as possible — it sets your rising sign and the houses, which shift roughly every two hours. Check a birth certificate (full UK certificates often show the time for multiple births only, so ask family) or a baby book.
- Place of birth (town or city). Latitude and longitude set the horizon.

Step 1: Your big three
Sun sign — the sign the Sun was in. Your core self, purpose and the energy you are here to express. This is your “star sign”.
Moon sign — the sign the Moon was in. Your emotional life: how you feel, what comforts you, how you react under pressure and what you need in relationships to feel safe. Many people relate to their Moon sign more than their Sun sign in private.
Rising sign (ascendant) — the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth. Your outer manner, first impressions, appearance and approach to new situations. It also sets the whole house structure, which is why the birth time matters.
Read the three together. A Capricorn Sun with a Pisces Moon and Gemini rising is ambitious and disciplined at the core, deeply sensitive underneath, and chatty and curious on first meeting — a person a Sun-sign horoscope alone would never capture.
Step 2: The planets
- Mercury — how you think, learn and communicate.
- Venus — how you love, what you value and find beautiful, how you relate.
- Mars — drive, desire, anger and how you go after what you want.
- Jupiter — growth, luck, expansion and belief.
- Saturn — discipline, responsibility, limits and the lessons that take time.
- Uranus, Neptune, Pluto — slower generational planets: change and originality, imagination and spirituality, transformation and power.
Each planet takes on the flavour of the sign it sits in. Venus in Aries loves boldly and fast; Venus in Taurus loves slowly and loyally. In relationship readings, Venus, Mars and the Moon are the placements astrologers look at first.
Step 3: The houses
The house a planet sits in shows where in life its energy shows up:

- Communication, siblings, learning
- Home, family, roots

- Work, routine, health
- Partnership and marriage
- Intimacy, shared resources, transformation
- Beliefs, travel, higher learning

So Mars in the 10th house pours drive into career; Mars in the 7th brings passion — and friction — into partnerships. An empty house is not a problem; it simply means that area runs on the sign on its cusp rather than a planet.
Step 4: Aspects and patterns
Aspects are the angles between planets. Conjunctions (planets together) blend energies; trines and sextiles flow easily; squares and oppositions create tension that pushes growth. You do not need to master these to get value from your chart, but they explain the contradictions — why someone can be both fiercely independent and desperate for connection.
Also notice elements (how many placements in fire, earth, air and water) and stelliums (three or more planets in one sign or house), which concentrate a chart’s energy in one area.
Reading a chart in practice: a short example
Someone comes to a reading asking why relationships keep stalling. Their chart shows Venus in Virgo in the 7th house, square Saturn. An astrologer might say: you approach love carefully and want to get it right (Venus in Virgo), partnership is central to your life story (7th house), but a fear of getting it wrong or of not being enough (the Saturn square) makes you hold back or over-analyse. The conversation then turns to what that pattern feels like in real life and what helps — which is where a reading becomes useful rather than descriptive.
